David Waxman is currently Professor of Biology at the University of Sussex. He originally started his studies in Physics, gaining his BSc in Physics at University College London in 1980. He them moved to Sussex University and gained a PhD in Theoretical Physics in 1984 under the Supervision of Professor Tony Leggett, where he investigated the effects of dissipation on quantum tunnelling at finite temperatures. After a one year postdoctoral position in the USA at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, working with Professor Sudip Chakravarty, David returned to Sussex as a Lecturer in Theoretical Condensed State Physics. He was made a Reader in Theoretical Physics in 1994. In 1998 he changed subject at Sussex and moved into the Biology Department at Sussex and in 2005 was made Professor of Biology.
David has been a Visiting Scientist at the Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble, France, has held an Engineering and Physics Research Council Advanced Fellowship, has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Perpignan, France. He has been the External MSc Programme Examiner of the CoMPLEX MSc at University College London, the External Programme Advisor on the Mathematical Biology Degree at Southampton University. He has served on the Editorial Board of American Naturalist and is a Member of the Editorial Board of Theoretical Population Biology.
His current research covers various aspects of quantitative biology, including population genetics, evolution and animal behaviour, with particular emphasis on the stochastic processes occurring in these areas. His work has been published in Nature, Science, PNAS, Genetics, Evolution, American Naturalist, Journal of Theoretical Biology and Theoretical Population Biology. He has taught courses at all university levels, and most recently has given lecture courses on Biological Modelling and Statistics for Biologists.
